The Yukon Transportation Museum started life as a recreation-centre for servicemen in the Royal Canadian Air Force, including a pool, lounge, basketball court, and weight-lifting gym. Eventually, as the Cold War began de-escalating during the 1980s, the air force’s presence in Whitehorse dwindled and the centre was repurposed in 1987 for use in the soon-to-be Transportation Museum. Originally planned as an aviation museum, the territorial government convinced the planners to go with a broader, more inclusive focus. Everything was in place for a grand opening in 1990, and since then the staff are proud to deliver a comprehensive overview of The Yukon’s transportation-history with friendly as well as professional attitudes! According to its 2024 mission-statement, it strives “to tell stories of Yukoners’ ingenuity and self-sufficiency through the history of transportation in the Yukon.” It does so under a mandate to “to identify, acquire, preserve and conserve the history, cultural material and artifacts of Yukon’s transportation modes and to interpret this history in an educational manner for all Yukoners and visitors alike.” Alongside first-time tourists looking to learn about the territory through fresh eyes, many visitors are those who came to the region previously and are happy to see their old jobs commemorated!
