Archival Item

2019.6.1
This is a to-scale model of the Frank H. Brown container ship built by Captain C.R. Priestly in 1967, two years after the construction of the ship itself. There is some significant damage to the artifact, including a splitting hull and peeling stainless steel paneling. Some paint is peeling as well, but overall there is no damage that could not be reversed by a model builder well versed in making these types of repairs.

Donation also includes metal WP&YR stand and display box, although these items are not part of the accessioned artifact. Non-accessioned statistics insert also included.

153cm x 62cm x 115.5cm (L x W x H of display base)
The Frank H. Brown container ship was built by MIL Vickers Inc. shipbuilding company in Montreal in 1965 and operated by the White Pass and Yukon Route transportation company. It was the world's first automated container ship. The ship mainly transported freight and petroleum products between Vancouver and Skagway, where its containers were then placed on trains and shipped by rail to the Yukon. The model, commissioned in 1967, won an overall silver medal at the 1967 P.N.E. Hobby Show. Until its donation to the YTM, the model was displayed in the lobby of the WPYR head office in Skagway.
