Hand winch
Windlass used in Shaft Mining. It is mounted on 2 metal sheets, 80 cm high, 50 cm wide at bottom tapering to 10 cm wide at top. A 2 cm metal screw 58 cm long is treaded at both ends and joins the tops of the two walls. At 16 cm from top of wall is a wooden cylinder 19 cm diam, which is suspended on a metal bar, which extends out of each wall. At one end a metal handle is attached. At 33 cm from end of handle, metal bends down at 45 degree angle and extends another 38 cm. The wooden cylinder tapers down at 9 cm from each end 1 cm. At right of wooden cyclinder are two gears, one beside the other. Both gears have teeth. Inner gear 25 cm diam x 4 cm thick. The outer gear, directly beside it, has 11 cm diam x 6 cm thick. At 30 cm from bottom of each wall a metal rod extends to each wall. It holds a metal drum 15 cm diam, flanged outward at each end. At bottom along front and back of windlass a metal rod extends from wall to wall.
A windlass is a device for hoisting in a shaft, used to raise or lower buckets.
